The International Day of the Rights of the Child is celebrated every year on November 20 around the world. In Finland, there is a special reason to celebrate this year, because it was finally decided to make the Day of the Rights of the Child an established flag day in 2020.
Child's Rights Week is a functional themed week held in conjunction with Children's Rights Day, the aim of which is to increase awareness of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the realization of children's rights. This year, the week is celebrated from 15 to 21 November and the theme is the child's right to good treatment.
At Aurala's daycare center, the Children's Rights theme week is implemented together with the children. The week's activities are planned and implemented from the children's point of view, i.e. taking into account their interests, ideas and wishes! In the previous week, we organize a children's parliament in children's groups, where they get to share their wishes and ideas. The adult "collects" the wishes and prepares the coming week to inform the parents. So far, requests from the children include movie time, no daytime rest, dessert, own toy day, park trip and treat day.
We learn about children's rights under the guidance of the character Tiuku. The Tiuku character was created in cooperation with children in the OIVA project of the University of Jyväskylä. Tiuku has written five letters to the children. The letter contains information about the Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as a nice talk about the theme. We get the materials directly from the National Children's Rights Communication Network, paspennoiket.fi .
