Instructions for Students

Anyone can study at Aurala Community College regardless of their place of residence, and membership in Aurala Setlementti ry is not required for studies.

Study Materials:
Books, materials, and supplies are not included in the course fees. Student works and hobby equipment left at Aurala Community College after the end of the academic year will not be stored. For exercise classes, you can bring your own exercise mat if you wish. Purchasing a textbook for the first class is not necessary if the student is unsure of the course level and wants to reserve the possibility of changing levels.

Language Studies:
Here you can study several different languages annually. You can maintain and develop your current language skills or start learning a completely new language. You can study languages in courses, short courses, and online. You can also purchase tailored language instruction. You can enroll in courses even in the middle of the semester if there is space and if the current skill level of the course is suitable for you.

In language proficiency descriptions, we use a proficiency scale based on the European framework:

Basic Level (basic language proficiency A1 and A2)
Intermediate Level (independent user’s language proficiency B1 and B2)
Proficient Level (proficient user’s language proficiency C1 and C2)

Insurance:
Students are responsible for personal injuries themselves. Students’ property is not insured. Aurala Community College is not responsible for students’ unfinished or completed works or tools stored on the college premises.

Certificates:
A fee of 10 € is charged for requested certificates (at least 2/3 of the course completed), including postage. Instructions related to credit-bearing courses can be found here.

No classes on:

  • Public holidays
  • During the Christmas break
  • During week 8 in the spring semester (winter holiday week)

Changes:
The right to make changes to the program is reserved. Aurala Community College is not responsible for any printing errors in the brochure or on the internet.

If a Student Cancels Participation:

If there are 10 days or more until the start of the course, a 10 euro processing fee will be charged for course cancellation. Cancellations must always be made by phone to the office. If there are less than 10 days until the start of the course, the full course fee will be charged (including unpaid course fees).

If a student is absent from a class due to travel, other personal reasons, or illness, the lesson will not be compensated to the student.

Missed lessons due to illness will not be compensated to the student, unless it is a prolonged sick leave for which a medical certificate can be presented. In such cases, the sick leave must be reported to the college office as soon as possible.

Cancellation or Modification of a Course by Aurala Community College:

The fee for a cancelled course will be refunded, except in force majeure situations (more information below). A course may be cancelled if there are not enough registered participants approximately 5 working days before the start of the course. Registered participants will be informed of the cancellation by text message.

Conditions for Course Fee Refunds in Force Majeure Situations

Force majeure refers to a surprising and unforeseen event that prevents a party from fulfilling its contractual obligations. For example, a coronavirus epidemic can cause a force majeure situation as described above. During the coronavirus pandemic, Aurala Community College follows official guidelines for organizing contact teaching.

Transferring Teaching to Online Instruction or Implementing Teaching Later

If there are restrictions on contact teaching from authorities, instruction can be transferred to distance learning by the rector’s decision. Teaching sessions can also be postponed to a later date. If the course continues as distance learning or contact teaching is implemented at a later date, there are no grounds for course fee refunds.

Conditions for Course Fee Refunds in Force Majeure Situations

  1. If instruction can be continued as online or distance learning, or if instruction can be postponed to a later date, the course fee will not be refunded. Failure to participate in organized distance learning or compensatory course sessions is not a basis for a course fee refund.
  2. If instruction cannot be continued as distance learning or postponed to a later date, the student may apply for a refund of the course fee. In this case, the course fee will be refunded proportionally to the remaining course sessions. Amounts under 30 euros will not be refunded. For a course fee refund, the student must contact the community college office and provide the necessary bank details for the refund.
